The Naperville League of Women Voters, in conjunction with North Central College, will host a debate, "Give Me Liberty-or Give Me Security!" on Monday, April 12 at 7:30 PM at Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton.
A debate earlier this year on the Patriot Act served as a model for several other LWV events throughout the state. This time we will take on a related subject: executive power v. civil liberties.
The Supreme Court has recently agreed to hear an appeal by the Bush administration of a decision by the 2nd Circuit Court that the President may not "unilaterally arrest a U.S. citizen on American soil and hold him indefinitely in military detention as an 'enemy combatant'." (Edmund Lazarus, FindLaw.com on the CNN website). Those who favor increased security against terrorists in unusual wartime circumstanaces side with the Bush administration, while those who see this as a further erosion of the rights of American citizens side with the 2nd Circuit.
The public is invited to attend this debate. For further information, please call Judy Brodhead, 961 3556.
