DESCRIPTION:"The Liberal Politics of John Rawls\: Why be Fair?"\,\na
presentation by Fred Yankowski\n\nJohn Rawls is one of the most import
ant political and ethical\nthinkers of the last century. His 1971 boo
k\, Theory of Justice \nargued for a conception of politics based on l
 iberal\nprinciples of equality\, fairness\, and concern for the\ndisad
vantaged. I will present a summary of the key points of\nhis argument
\, based on reading his recent book\, \nJustice as Fairness. We will
consider these questions\:\n\n + What does it mean to base justice on
fairness?\n\n + Does this conception of justice agree with Humanism?
\n\n + What does Rawls mean by "original position"\, \n "veil of i
gnorance"\, and "difference principle"?\n\n + Is this conception of j
ustice realistic\, or is it a utopian\n vision?
