Immigration Law
The Humanist Group will meet Wednesday, May 17th 2006 at 7:30 pm in Kreves Hall at the DUUC. August Staas, an attorney, will talk from his experience with "Immigration Law." August Staas served as the Director of the Asian Human Services Legal Clinic, providing free legal representation to low-income immigrants. He has significant experience with a series of know-your rights symposia under the auspices of the United Way; working with the ACLU; the Midwest Immigrant and Human Rights Center; the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, and other community-based organizations. He hosted a regular CAN-TV public access program Immigrant Issues, and received a Community Empowerment Award for his work in the Asian community. August currently serves on the board of directors for a homeless shelter for Hispanic families, and provides pro bono legal counsel to a grass roots Hispanic community organization. August is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Law, has been on the adjunct faculty at the Chicago-Kent School of Law; studied Chinese intellectual history at the University of Chicago and National Taiwan Normal University; and he is an attorney in private practice. August was born and raised Unitarian-Universalist. Members and friends of DUUC are especially invited.
