Without a doubt, we Humanists see value in coming together, evidenced by the social gatherings always being well attended.  Like our Labor Day picnic, the summer gathering has become an important annual event.  So before we retreat into the air-conditioned environment of home, office or car, let us once more gather to celebrate the onset of summer and the joy in being with one another.

Wikipedia describes the Summer Solstice as a celebration since ancient times, an astrological event and a time of mystery and religious fervor.  People once believed that mid-summer plants had miraculous healing powers so they were harvested on this night.  Bonfires were lit to protect against evil spirits which were said to roam freely when the sun was turning southwards. Later, witches were thought to be on their way to meetings with other evil powers.  In Sweden there were sacrifices in the name of fertility.  Christianity used this time to venerate saints such as 5th Century St. Elegius, patron of goldsmiths, or more broadly, St. John the Baptist.  On a more secular plane, Hindus named their summer day, Dakshinayana, and celebrated it in mid-july.  Setisbun is a word used by the Japanese to commemorate the start of all four seasons.  But whatever the notation, each change is marked as an important event.

Pot luck means bringing food to share, proportional to the number in your party.  In order to have an idea of how many chairs to set up, we ask that you make your reservations with Jack Sechrest at 630 554-8058 or jack@skognet.com beforehand.  Friends and family are encouraged to attend and join in the gemutlichkeit of summer’s onset.  If you find at the last minute that you are indeed able to attend, we will find room.   So just come.
