This year marks the commemoration of Abraham Lincoln, born 200 years ago and assassinated on April 14, 1865, a day that happened to be Good Friday. In a recent C-SPAN poll, historians chose Lincoln as our greatest president. Our April program shows how Lincoln's ability to coach public sentiment catapulted him from obscurity into the front ranks of national politics.
Author, Georgiann Baldino, shows how Lincoln began his campaign for the United States Senate by following Stephen A. Douglas around to take advantage of the crowds Douglas drew. The candidates wrangled for 21 hours on seven stages to gain support for differing views of America's future. Constituents were being asked to consider more than which candidate should represent Illinois in the Senate. Lincoln and Douglas were also debating the meaning of democracy, and they posed questions we still struggle with today.
Georgiann Baldino’s writing covers a wide spectrum that includes novels, short stories and nonfiction. She also gives programs to groups, ranging from small workshops to large public gatherings, on the ways that journaling becomes self-healing. Her companion book for this presentation is Following Lincoln as He Followed Douglas. Her books will be available for purchase and signing.
